Sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda, is an inorganic compound with the formula NaOH, and it is used for a variety of
industrial applications, among the more popular end uses include:
Pulp and paper
Soaps
Textiles
Chemical neutralizations
Pigments and fillers
Synthesis of chemicals
Water treatment
Food
Ore and mineral production
Sodium hydroxide is a colorless crystalline solid
that melts at 318 °C (604 °F) without decomposition and with a
boiling point of
1,388 °C (2,530 °F). It is highly soluble in water,
with a lower solubility in polar solvents such as ethanol and methanol. Sodium hydroxide is insoluble in ether and other non-polar solvents.
